Bald aber trat ein emsigerer Gesprächspartner auf den Plan: ein soeben aus dem Fernen Osten zurückgekehrter Vertragsseemann aus Shetland, der mir seine Gedanken zur Evolution des Menschen unbedingt mitteilen wollte. Gebräunt und bärtig, mit dem brennenden Blick eines Löwen, erklärte er mir, daß der Mensch nicht etwa deshalb aufrecht gegangen, weil er intelligent geworden sei, sondern intelligent geworden sei, weil er begonnen hätte, aufrecht zu gehen. Denn aufrecht benötigte sein Hirn eine 'kräftigere Zufuhr' - an was genau, sagte er nicht - um die Hitze der Sonnenstrahlen von oben abzutransportieren. Und je mehr 'Zufuhr' er im Kopf hatte, desto größer wurde sein Hirn.
 

Soon, however, a more enthusiastic interlocutor appeared: a contract seaman from Shetland, who had recently returned from the Far East, and who was obviously quite determined to share with me his thoughts on the evolution of Man. Tanned and bearded, and with the fervent gaze of a lion, he explained to me that humans had not begun to walk upright because they had become intelligent, but become intelligent because they had begun to walk upright. In an upright position, he went on, the brain of those early humans had required a 'stronger supply' - of what exactly he didn't say - in order to carry the heat of the sun's rays away from the head. And the more 'supply' there had been in the head, the larger the brain had become.
