Zwei oder drei räudige Streuner untersuchten sie flüchtig. Ich legte mich hin. Ein Gecko kam die Wand herunter, hielt inne und wedelte königlich mit dem Schwanz. Sehr aufmerksam waren die Geckos nicht. Manchmal kannte ihr Stumpfsinn keine Grenzen. Manchmal stießen sie eine Fliege sogar mit der Schnauze an, und sie konnte trotzdem davonfliegen. Ich sah sogar mehrmals einen auf eine Motte treten, ohne es zu merken.

My clothes were drying outside in the lively wind. Two or three mangy strays gave them a cursory examination. I had a lie-down. A gecko came down the wall, paused and gave a royal wave or two with its tail. Geckos were not very perspicacious. Sometimes, indeed, their hebetude knew no limits. One would nudge a fly with its snout but it still managed to fly off. More than once I saw one actually tread on a moth without noticing it.
