Saarbrücken, 13. Februar 2007 – Im Mai 1999 stieg der Übersetzer, Autor und gebürtige Engländer Gareth Bartley auf sein Fahrrad um einige Freunde zu besuchen. Bei seiner Rückkehr im Februar 2001 hatte er dann eine Strecke von knapp 100.000 km zurückgelegt (davon alleine 27.000 km per Fahrrad), 6 Kontinente und 20 Länder bereist und dabei einmal die Erde umrundet. Als Transportmittel dienten ihm hierbei ausschließlich sein Rad sowie eine Handvoll Frachtschiffe.

Saarbrücken, February 13th 2007 – In May 1999 the Englishman Gareth Bartley, a translator and author, got on his bike to go and visit a few friends. By the time he returned in February 2001 he had covered some 16,800 miles by bike and some 60,000 in all, seen 6 continents and 20 countries, and circumnavigated the globe while doing so, using only the bicycle and a handful of freight vessels.

Über seine Erfahrungen, Einblicke in Kulturen, die nur aus der besonderen Perspektive dieses Abenteuers sichtbar werden, aber auch unerwartete Begegnungen mit seinem Alter Ego berichtet der Autor nun in seinem soeben erschienenen Buch „Maek-ju han-pyong“, welches von Gareth Bartley in der ihm eigenen, besonderen Art im Selbstverlag herausgegeben wurde. Dank seiner minutiösen Aufzeichnungen des Reiseverlaufs, Hunderter unterwegs in Form von Briefen versandter Notizen sowie 214 Stunden Tonbandaufzeichnungen ist ein Werk entstanden, das den geneigten Leser mit auf eine hochinteressante und kurzweilige Reise ins Unbekannte nimmt.

In 'Maek-ju han-pyong', recently published by the author himself, he narrates his experiences and insights into other cultures, many of which were only able to be gained thanks to the special nature of this journey, but also tells of unexpected encounters with his alter ego. His painstaking recording of what happened during the journey, hundreds of notes sent home in epistolary form and 214 hours of tape recordings, have contributed to a work which will take the well-disposed reader off on a very interesting, entertaining journey into the unknown. |
Indem er sein Werk mit mehr als nur einer Prise englischen Humors spickt, gelingt es dem Autor seine Leser fast nebensächlich nicht nur in eine andere Welt zu entführen, sondern auch überraschende Einblicke in das Wesen des Menschen an sich zu gewähren. Fragen an das eigene Sein, das Woher und Wohin des Individuums und somit den Sinn des Lebens wagt er auf dieser Reise geradezu beiläufig zu stellen und überraschender Weise – zumindest für sich selbst – zum Teil auch zu beantworten.

Thanks to Gareth Bartley's linguistic talent, 'Maek-ju han-pyong' developed more or less parallel in German and English. His attention to detail has given rise to a high-quality, sewn-bound hardback edition 17 x 24 cm with almost 600 pages. His passion for ships and the sea, and for going to the limit in long-distance sport, gave birth to the idea of just riding home – 'the other way round!' |

Geboren 1954 als de facto Einzelkind in Welwyn Garden City, einer Schlafstadt im Norden Londons, wuchs Gareth Bartley in materialistisch bequemen, jedoch nicht einfachen Verhältnissen auf, flog mit 16 Jahren aus einer der besten Privatschulen des Landes, fiel in ein Loch, versäumte dadurch die Möglichkeit zu studieren und den damit einhergehenden gesellschaftlichen Anschluss ... und blieb - gar nicht so ungern - Einzelgänger. Die Liebe verschlug ihn 1985 nach Saarbrücken, wo er weiterhin lebt und als freier Übersetzer und Sprecher arbeitet. Er gibt an, recht wenige der Dinge gemacht zu haben, die man so macht, und fühlt sich beim Waldlauf oder auf offener See immer noch am wohlsten.

About the author:
Born a de facto only child in Welwyn Garden City, a dormitory town on London's northern edge, Gareth Bartley grew up in conditions that were comfortable in material terms but by no means simple, was expelled at 16 from one of the best public schools in the country, fell into a hole, missed out on the opportunity to study and the social connection that would have been associated with it ... and remained – not as reluctantly as one might think – a loner. Love transplanted him to Saarbrücken in 1985, where he continues to live and work as a freelance translator and speaker. He admits to having done very few of the things that one does, and still feels happiest running in the woods or out on the open sea.
