Der Hafen, wo ich mich dem ersten Frachter dieser Reise anschloß. Ich kannte Portsmouth schon ein wenig aus meiner Schulzeit, doch es war viel mehr als nur ein Ort des Einschiffens: Es war das Sprungbrett zum Abenteuer. Bis dorthin war alles mehr oder weniger vertraut gewesen. Jetzt hieß es Next stop South America.

This was the port where I joined my first freighter on this trip. I knew Pompey a bit from my schooldays. Yet it was much more than just a place to embark. It was a launch pad to adventure. So far everything had been more or less familiar, but now it was a case of 'Next stop South America'.

In Georgetown weilte ich 14 Tage, weil meine Bootsverbindung nach Venezuela noch klargemacht werden mußte. So hatte ich reichlich Gelegenheit, meine Kenntnisse der Stadt und der Guyanesen zu vertiefen: und Kricketspielen beizuwohnen.

Für mich ein Wiedersehen. Dort hatte ich 1991 den Spitznamen bekommen, den ich zum Titel dieses Buches gemacht habe. Und jetzt auf der Radtour, genau wie damals, bewegte ich mich in Pusan nur zu Fuß, und nahm die Gerüche, die Laute, die Vibrationen des südkoreanischen Lebens in mich auf.

Not just a visit but a revisit. It was there in 1991 that I was given the nickname I've used as the title of this book. And on this bicycle tour, just as did then, I only moved around in Pusan on foot, absorbing the odours, sounds and vibrations of South Korean life.

Wenn du satt bist willst du nichts mehr essen. Ich hatte meine kleine Tour in Indien fertiggemacht, aber dort kommen die Eindrücke so gehäuft auf dich zugeeilt, daß du sehr schnell genug kriegst. Interessante Bekanntschaften machte ich aber. Und Chennai setzte für mich die ganze Reise in Perspektive.

When you're full up you don't feel like eating any more. I had finished my little tour in India, but in India impressions come rushing at you in such quantities that you very quickly reach a state of satiation. But I did make some interesting acquaintances. And Chennai put the whole journey into perspective for me.
